Watershed management and re-use of wastewater in peri-uran areas in Yemen.

  • Aim: to define strategies for sustainable development of the natural resources in the upstream catchment areas
  • Project end: March 2002

Environmental resources assessment for rural land use planning project

  • Aim: to use GIS techniques for proper land use planning
  • Project end: August 2002

Shabwah governorate - TASH project

  • Aim: to improve the socio-economic situation in Shabwah governorate, to define strategies for sustainable development of the natural resources in the upstream catchment areas.
  • Project end: August 2002

Rural Women General Directorate of the MAI

  • Aim: mainstreaming gender within the Ministry and the Agriculture offices at governorate level
  • Project end: mid 2003

Support of rural development through the Public Works Project

  • Aim: rural development activities in the governorates of Shabwah, Dhamar, Hodeidah, Aden and Hajjaj
  • Project end: probably 2003

Support to Small Enterprise Development Fund

  • Aim: to stimulate the set up and growth of small and medium enterprises through the provision of credit facilities
  • Project end: December 2002

Pipeline projects

The activities, which are in the pipeline for support in 2002, include:

A study of the economic sector, its opportunities and what is needed to develop these opportunities and how The Netherlands to economic sector development can best be provided for the next five years. A more detailed economic opportunity study will be done in the governorate of Shabwah.

Yemeni institutions that are involved in Yemen’s accession to the WTO and GCC are more capable to lead this country during this process to become member of WTO and GCC.

The restructuring process of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MAI), of Shabwah government and of the Cooperative and Agriculture Credit Bank has started, as well as the human resources development aspects.

A number of well-defined activities have started to ensure that MAI is in a better position to guide the developments within the agricultural sector.

Continuing support to Shabwah governorate as from August 2002, but instead as a project the support will be to assist the governorate to implements its activities (operational costs) and to improve the capacity of the government through restructuring and human resources development.

The Small Enterprises Development Fund will become in important player in the field of credit for small and medium enterprises.

Creation of a training programme for the Yemeni Corps Diplomatique, aimed at economic and trade representation.

Stakeholder co-ordination is started, in particular for the decentralisation and for the private sector development.

Where required and possible, the embassy and its Yemeni partners will work together with specialised organisations in The Netherlands, such as CBI (EU market entrance) and FMO/NIO (subsidies for economic transactions and projects).
